Legally Sane The story of Mark Alan Smith, serial killer At loooooooong last, I ve read Legally Sane by John Hahn and Harold McKenney, 16 years after I started looking for it I was referred to this one because someone I know lost her best friend in high school to this guy I was expecting the story of a single murder, but upon being arrested for the murder of my friend s friend, I learned that he cheerfully volunteered to his defense attorney that he d also killed over a dozen women across the Midwest, Korea, Germany and maybe Switzerland, all well At loooooooong last, I ve read Legally Sane by John Hahn and Harold McKenney, 16 years after I started looking for it I was referred to this one because someone I know lost her best friend in high school to this guy I was expecting the story of a single murder, but upon being arrested for the murder of my friend s friend, I learned that he cheerfully volunteered to his defense attorney that he d also killed over a dozen women across the Midwest, Korea, Germany and maybe Switzerland, all well before the age of 30 This is a good, clear portrait of what they used to rightly call a moral imbecile he s perfectly normal except for this one gaping hole in his personality A perfect example is when he describes the same incident of forced sex on a woman he s abducted, in adjacent sentences, as I raped her and also as we made love Where do they all come from I went to school with Mark Smith This mostly happened in my hometown It was amazing to read events that were so closely associated with family, neighborhood, and school The book explores how a serial killer could be declared sane, yet clearly have acted out of pure madness for most of his childhood, teen years, and those as a young man It is written from the legal viewpoint and is quite gripping.
