for a Scrooge like boss who does not appreciate her work or cut her a break when family issues arise.Ms Mahkovec crams a lot of events and emotion into this little story, and the pages flew by as I was totally immersed in the characters and their minute by minute joys and worries The five and eight year old boys seem so true to life, and Lillian, a doting mother, experiences all the ups and downs of trying to raise two growing lads on her own Her husband died suddenly four years earlier, and she still misses him terribly Besides her personal woes, there is the heavy weight of impending danger Hitler is making his move across Europe, and her friends and acquaintances are split as to how the US should respond And, oh yes, it s Christmas.I loved the characters in this story Lillian keeps fighting to be a good mother, butthan that, she wants to find herself She wants to become someone better Time after time, things go wrong Lillian despairs, briefly She picks herself up and keeps on going I loved her friend Izzy, who is so vibrant and full of life I loved the boys, who are the epitome of children that age impulsive, selfish and in the next breath, loving again whiney, playful, and exuberant Christmastime 1939 is filled with joy and laughter, with challenges and sorrows It s like reading about the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future There s plenty of inspiration to be found in Lillian s family and friends 5 stars Christmastime 1939 is a nostaglic trip back to 1939before World War Two, when life seemed easier Except life isn t easy for Lillian, a young widow with
